3 Simple Swaps That Finally Helped Me Sleep Through Perimenopause
Here's the payoff: three small, doable swaps that took me from staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m. to waking up feeling like a human again. No fancy gadgets, no overhaul of your whole life. I've been through perimenopause and come out the other side, and these are the changes I wish someone had handed me at the start.
Sound familiar?
- You fall asleep fine, then you're wide awake at 3 a.m. with your brain replaying every email you've sent since 2004.
- You wake up warm and sticky, kick the covers off, then you're freezing ten minutes later.
- Your mornings feel foggy, no matter how early you went to bed.
- That "one glass of wine to relax" somehow makes the night worse.
I lived in that loop for a long time. Here's what actually helped.
Swap #1: Scrolling in bed → a 30-minute wind-down
I used to scroll until my eyes gave out. Now my phone goes face-down (or better, in another room) 30 minutes before lights out. I dim the lamps, make a cup of herbal tea, and read something light or colour a page or two. It tells my body the day is done, and my mind stops racing so fast.
Swap #2: A warm, stuffy room → a cool, breathable bedroom
Turning the thermostat down a few degrees made a bigger difference than I expected. I switched to cotton or linen sheets, layered blankets I can peel off, and keep a small fan on the nightstand. When you wake up warm, it's so much easier to drift back off in a cool room.
Swap #3: Late snacks and wine → an earlier, protein-rich dinner
This one surprised me most. Eating a bigger, protein-rich dinner a few hours before bed (and skipping the late-night snack and the nightly glass of wine) meant fewer middle-of-the-night wake-ups. If I'm hungry later, a small handful of nuts or a little yogurt does the trick.
What I use
Once those three swaps were in place, I added one more thing to my bedtime routine: the sleep magnesium oil I use (you can find all the details there). I spray a few spritzes on the bottoms of my feet or my calves as part of my wind-down. It's become my little "okay, time for bed" signal, and I love that it's a simple, clean product I'd buy anyway.
Quick heads-up: magnesium oil can tingle a bit the first few times you use it, especially on freshly shaved legs. That's normal for a lot of people and usually eases up. Try it on a small area first.
